I'm testing the Win7 Enterprise edition, and ran into a 'known incompatibility' message when installing Norton Ghost 12. Feeling adventuresome (since it runs perfectly well with the RC1 version), I clicked 'install anyway', downloaded the latest updates from Symantec (over 200 MB as I recall) and have been successfully running Ghost 12 ever since, just like I've been doing with the RC1 version (Win 7 32 bit version) since May. So my question is WHAT compatibility problem? I searched Symantec's Web site and didn't see anything there, and have seen posts here pointing to incompatibilities with Ghost, but it's working perfectly well for me. So I must ask, is there some hidden gotcha that's one day going to jump out and huff and puff and blow my house down?:-) If so, I'd sure like someone to tell me what it is!

My suspicion is that the Symantec update fixed whatever the problem was, but information on this subject has eluded me. It seems like MS needs to either explain what the 'known incompatability' is or stop putting out bad warnings, one or the other. Oh yes, Action Center says 'No current issues detected'.

In Control PanelBackup and Restore, clicking “Backup a system image” in the right pane could easily create a system image. Why don't I want to use the backup built into Win 7 you ask? Here're just a few reasons: 1) Ghost takes under 15 min. To back up 18 gig, Win 7 backup takes over 30 min.

2) Ghost's backup takes 9 gig of disk space, Win 7 takes 39 gig! Amazing that the backup takes more than DOUBLE the space of what it's backing up. 3) I haven't researched this, but I know I can restore a Ghost image when I don't have a running version of Windows, can I do that with the Win 7 backup? 4) MS has a track record of changing their backup program with every release, creating incompatibilities. I've been burned by this in the past. 5) I've been using Ghost backups for years with NEVER the 1st problem, and Win 7 backup is an unknown.

6) Ghost has incremental backups, does the Win 7 one? 7) Ghost has a 'Recovery Point Browser' whereby I can restore individual files and folders, does the Win 7 one? 8) Why should I go through a new learning curve when I have the perfect solution for my purposes already? 9) You nor anyone else apparently knows what this 'known incompatibility' is. My guess is that someone doing the testing simply made a mistake. In the absence of evidence to the contrary, I think my guess has plenty validity.

Pat, thanks much for your post and info. It would appear that you know much more than MS does about this! I assume you saw Arthur's post that Ghost 14 is what MS recommends.:-( I guess I just lucked out by not having seen any of the problems you mentioned. Based on Arthur's post I went out and bought Ghost 14, but you say IT has problems too. Again lucky for me that I got it on sale at Fry's where all I had to pay was sales tax (they have it on sale for $70 with $70 in rebates). And I got Norton's Internet Security 2009 plus Norton SystemWorks 12 in the deal along with Ghost 14.

I don't plan to use any of this package until I need it, but now I guess I'm prepared for whatever until Ghost 15 comes out; and they tell me I need to upgrade to that! It would appear that both MS and Symantec are mired in their own bureaucracy.:-( Thanks again Pat. I marked your post as helpful.

Is there a way for Ghost to start the activation date when restoring Windows 7 WIM images from the time of the restore. At present it takes the activation date from when the WIM image is created so if we restore a month or so later it's automatically expired. The scenario is we want to take an image of a standard PC and in the event of a disaster quickly recover the office environment onto multiple machines which may or may not have internet connectivity at the time. Get people working quickly and then go through the activation process with via the website or after hooking up internet connectivity. Do we need a particular license from Microsoft to remain legal?
